Happy Ostara!
Ostara, Equinox, whatever.

Tonight, I'll be spending two hours getting cold outside AC Moore sitting our troop's last Girl Scout Cookie sales booth. I'll probably use the time to work on my current crochet project :-)

Birthday Party Pictures Up!
We had the (small, family) birthday party for Miriya last night. I posted a few photos ( http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/Jacylrin/?start=220 ). Here's a preview of one :-)

My sister made and decorated the cake. Hey, it was colorful. At least it was cream cheese frosting and a banana cake, so at least a little less sugary than most. As it was, Miriya had a few bites, but decided she'd had enough :-)

ska-WEEEE!
For their 50th anniversary, Fisher-Price is putting out old school design Little People. And I happen to have one at just the right age :-D. Granted, they're bigger than they were when we were growing up (choking hazard reduction and all), but the design is old school. So yeah, that's what Miriya is getting for her birthday. See, the usual Little People toys these days are more detailed. Somehow, I just don't like them quite as much. So yeah, here's the links :-D

FarPoint 2009
We went to a convention over the weekend. It went well. The girls entered the costume contest. They did great. Cora won Best Re-Creation--her first trophy! Photos from the weekend are up at http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/Jacylrin/?start=200 and the next page, but here's a teaser.

Cora entered as Young Reinette from the Dr. Who episode "The Girl in the Fireplace." Our reference photo was a making of still from the BBC Website ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/episodes/2006/photostories/fireplace/01b.shtml ). Miriya was the Baby Borg from the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Q Who." Reference screen cap: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Image:Borg_Infant%2C_Sam_Klatman.jpg .

DOOOoooooomed
Doom da doom doom DOOM!

Miriya took her first (unsupported) steps on Saturday! She took a few steps, stopped, dance/bounced up and down a few times, then sat down. Yay! But Doomed! *grin*

Then yesterday she finally managed to start standing up without having to use something else for leverage. She'd be out in the middle of the floor, stand herself up, take a few steps, plop on her rear, then crawl off.

Doomed, I tell you!

In the last week she also cut two more teeth. The first one was Saturday Feb. 1. It was NOT the top front center one we were expecting. No. Top her left eye tooth. Yeah, WTF? Just a little point is through, but still. Odd. Then again, she's ours. You weren't expecting normal ;-). The second was yes, that right top front tooth we have been expecting. It finally broke through Wednesday. So we are now up to five teeth.

Cora made honor roll. Yay, Cora! They start honor roll in 3rd grade (when they start getting letter grades instead of just checks with maybe plus or minus). She's gotten honor roll all 6 quarters so far :-).

And yes, it is very odd having one taking their first steps while the other can now dance en pointe :-P

And then there were three...
Wednesday evening we found that Miriya had her third tooth - the other lower front one (her right). The other upper front one won't be far behind from the swelling. Between teething and the remnants of creeping crud, she hasn't been sleeping well. Which means neither have I.

I need a nap :-P

Bye-bye
As in, Miriya now says "bye-bye" *grin*. It's very cute. We think she may sometimes say "hi" in response to someone saying it to her, but that's harder to tell.

Having two teeth, she can now grind them. The sound is cringe-inducing. She finds everyone's reaction highly entertaining. But the sound... *shudder*

Our washer and dryer are in an area that is usually unheated. Given the temperatures outside, we had been leaving the door open in an attempt to keep the pipes from freezing. Unfortunately, the concrete slab the pipes go through was still cold enough, they did indeed freeze. And Saturday evening we heard a crack, then hot water was spraying into the laundry area. Fortunately it is a small pipe, and my stepdad was able to rush down and shut off the hot water where it comes out of the hot water heater (which I hadn't thought of, duh). Yesterday he replaced the piping in question, and it wasn't too big of a PITA, so we have hot water in the house again. The joys of living in a house with "character" :-P

New tooth!
Last night I found that Miriya's upper left front tooth broke through. Yay! So now she has two.

And she's crawling up stairs. Last night we found her ON the second step heading for the third... twice. She's fast. So yeah, time to install THAT gate now, too :-P

Brainstorm request
OK, my geek peeps. Any ideas on costumes for Miriya and/or Cora for a convention costume contest?

Oh, and Valentines' day in a hotel... in a king size bed... with both our kids... Gotta love FarPoint Convention *snrk*

All I Want for Christmas is My One Front Tooth?
So, um, yeah. Lots of stuff has been happening in the last month. One of the more exciting events was that Miriya's first tooth finally came in on Christmas day!

She can crawl really fast, pull herself up to standing holding onto something, stay standing on her own for half a minute or more before needing to steady herself on something (for a week or two now), and is trying to figure out how to get from the "down on one knee" position to standing without an object to steady her. Yes, we are doomed.

In the last few weeks it has become obvious that sometimes yes, she does say "Mama" and "Dada" and actually mean us (with lots and lots of babbling besides). She has a good sense of rhythm, and likes to rock to the beat of music, which is why some of her presents last week involved things that will make music for her (that and her love of technology and buttons to push).

Her stats at her 12/16 9 month well baby were 21.5 pounds (90th percentile), 29 inches tall (90th percentile), and 19 inch head circumference (97.5+ percentile... yeah, she's mine, alright).

I (of course) have new photos posted at http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/Jacylrin/?start=200

My favorite was taken Thursday after the morning festivities at my Mother's and before getting ready for the evening gathering at my step-grandparents' place: http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/Jacylrin/20081225cbmb2.jpg

Mommy's Week
There's been news and pictures of the girls over the last week. Photos are up on my PhotoBucket - they start on page 10 ( http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e257/Jacylrin/?start=180 ) and continue on page 11. I'll spare your f-list and put the news and photo highlights under a cut.Collapse )

Mylicon Recall
For those with infants, check your bottles. Johnson & Johnson is recalling 2 lots of MYLICON® GAS RELIEF DYE FREE drops (simethicone-antigas) non-staining sold in 1 oz. plastic bottles due to possible metal fragments. http://www.mylicon.com/page.jhtml?id=mylicon/press_release.inc

While I definitely keep simethicone drops around, I tend to buy generic, so I think our supply is safe, but I'm definitely going to check.

Oh, sit...
Miriya figured out how to get herself from laying down up into a sitting position on Saturday (by way of getting up onto her hands and knees first, by the way). She still hasn't mastered the hands and knees crawling thing yet, though is starting to bounce enough while sitting up (resulting in slow forward movement) that she may go for the same scootch option her sister did if she gets more efficient at it. She still shows interest in figuring out the standard crawl, though (which her sister, frankly, did NOT). She has gotten pretty fast at sliding around on her belly, using her hands to push herself backwards. Boy, is that area of floor shiny... With the hardwood floor, it's hard for her to get much traction on her knees.

The girls went trick-or-treating at my uncle's place with his kids and their friends (since we don't live in a neighborhood). My sister went out with them - this had been the plan all along, but it was just as well since my hip seized and my knees were killing me. Cora got quite a haul. Miriya didn't actually go up to many doors, but managed a pound or so haul for her aunt *chuckle*

Copy this sentence into your LiveJournal or blog if you're in a heterosexual marriage, and you don't want it "protected" by people who think that GLBT marriage hurts it somehow.

Miriya's Development
In my last post, I forgot to mention Miriya's development. She babbles all sorts of syllables. She sits up very well. She can get up on her hands and knees when she has enough traction, but since she usually rolls off the floor quilt and onto the hardwood, she tends to use her hands to push herself around rather than crawl - belly sliding works very well on hardwood, after all, even if it does mean she backs into things and gets irritated that she can't go further. I think she realizes that crawling on her hands and knees will move her, but she seems to get frustrated when she can't figure out how to make it work, so tends to roll to a smooth surface and start sliding if she can.

Monday she figured out she can cross her fingers, and was doing so for a couple of hours. Tuesday she learned to clap. She figured out a couple of weeks ago the holding up the arms to get picked up thing. We have tried puffed rice cereal (quick dissolving) and tiny noodle bits (easily swallowed), but she doesn't seem to like particularly solid food yet, though she does like shoving them around on her tray. We'll work with basic foods with semi-solid small chunks first, I guess. I have bananas and acorn squash that we'll work with this weekend. She doesn't mind when her cereal is clumpy. Perhaps ripe banana and/or cooked squash bits will appeal to her for self-feeding, both being easy to gum. Last weekend she enjoyed gumming an apple slice (with Mommy watching so she didn't get a chunk off) since it was a very sweet apple, but that was more a teething experience with some juice extraction than a feeding thing.

Updates
First, about Miriya. The rash was improving, but then got worse and spread. Saw doctor Wednesday. He gave us a scrip for a steroid cream, but said try it a few days on a small spot first to see if it would make it better or worse. It seems to be helping a little, so I'll start using it on the whole rash tonight, but I think the main help was stopping the antifungal cream. I think it probably started as a yeast infection, then became a rash from the cream. Yay, sensitive skin *sigh*. She's definitely MY daughter. As long as it continues improvement, we'll be fine.

Last Thursday night/Friday morning at 12:30 or so, I rolled over in bed, and felt a distinctive sting on my left forearm. My single word comment was delivered with such feeling that my poor husband actually woke up and asked what it was. I told him I'd been stung. He got up and turned on the light, while providing more four letter commentary. He asked where my Epi-Pen was, and I told him (main level bathroom, on top of the box of cat litter in front of the closet door since I hadn't gotten around to putting it in the closet yet), but asked him to please calmly remove the wasp that was still crawling around on my arm - calmly, since wasps can sting again, of course. He was kind enough to do so before going and fetching the Epi-Pen (the wasp, which I later determined by pictures on Wikipedia to be a paper wasp, received burial at sea). So yeah, I got to use an Epi-Pen for the first time, having managed to not get stung in the more than nine years since the reaction that had me head to the ER when my throat started tightening. Frankly, the idea of a spring-loaded needle bothered me more than using a regular syringe (which I used to do for one of my arthritis drugs), but I did it (and it's good, since were I dressed, I could have done it through my clothes if need be, and anybody else could do it for me, too). Upon being informed that now that I had the Epi-Pen in my system we now needed to head to the ER, my husband provided some more colorful commentary, but was very good about it. I threw some clothes on, called Mom to let her know we were doing a drop and run, and we headed out the door (De grabbing his laptop and me grabbing a book). Mom was waiting by the driveway, so we were able to make the baby drop very quickly - and rarely have I been so happy to live 1/4 mile down the same driveway from Mom. I called the family practice while we were en route to let them know what was up so they could tell my insurance it was OK - while anaphylaxis means not having to ASK to go to the ER, I'd have had to call them later so they could retroactively OK it in the insurance system anyway, so I did it while I was thinking about it.

We were in the ER a grand total of two hours - I think the shortest ER trip I know of. While I could feel tightening in my throat, it wasn't severe, and I didn't even get hives since I got the Epi-Pen within a minute or two of getting stung. They gave me Benadryl and prednisone, and said that while they usually prefer to keep someone in the hospital at least 4 hours in case the reaction starts getting worse as the Epi-Pen wears off, I could go home if I promised to use my other Epi-Pen (since I had another) and come back if needed. I promised, and got to go home. A little groggy from lack of sleep and the Benadryl, the epinephrine meant I couldn't sleep, so while De went back to bed, I watched some Discovery Health Channel for a couple of hours before dozing off. I stayed home from work, since Benadryl means nap time. I filled my scrip for 4 more days of Prednisone, and took it each morning. It made me slightly manic and more scatter-brained than usual, but undoubtedly helped. The main discomfort, actually, was that after half an hour or so and for 4 or 5 hours, the muscle where I did the injection was tense and very sore (OK, rather painful). But it beats stopping breathing, so I'll take a medically-induced charlie horse over anaphylaxis.

In much less dramatic news, I managed to drop my laptop on my foot this morning. Fortunately it was the edge, not the corner, and only off the coffee table as I was trying to pick it up, so it could have been worse. Given the location, I'm stuck wearing my stretchy slide shoes with open toes, but other than having a bruise, I should be OK.

Anywho, other than Miriya's rash, the kids are doing well. De has a cold and was home sick a couple of days, but is back at work today.
